How to exercise when you don't have time
Between careers, social lives, and a myriad of other responsibilities, it can be exceedingly difficult to make time to focus on exercising. We may work long hours and come home tired, or we may need to pick up the kids right after our shift is over. The non-stop lifestyle of today’s modern world can make working out seem like an afterthought. Exercise, however, is an important part of maintaining a healthy body and mind, so it is important to make the time for physical activity even if you feel like your days are completely full. Here are some tips to make room for exercise despite a busy lifestyle.
Wake Up Earlier
It may be tempting to hit the snooze button multiple times in the morning, but for many people, this is the best time to work out. If you finish your exercise before work, you won’t have to worry about getting to a crowded gym during rush hour when you’re likely already drained from working all day. This has the added benefit of releasing endorphins and giving you more energy throughout the day.
Take the Stairs
If you work in an office building with an elevator, opt for the stairs if they are accessible. Climbing multiple steps of stairs several times a day will help to get your heart rate up and improve your leg strength, and it will only take a few minutes out of your day at a time.
Bike to Work
If you live a reasonable distance from work and the weather is nice, biking can be an excellent way to get a workout in. You’ll enjoy the benefits of cardio while avoiding the stressful morning traffic, killing two birds with one stone.
Make Simple Tasks Harder
There are many ways to engage your muscles during everyday tasks, so get creative. One example is to alternate standing on one leg while brushing your teeth, helping to improve balance and strengthen your core. Try doing bodyweight squats while cooking or do a couple sets of pushups before you get into the shower.
Optimize Your Lunch Break
If you have a gym in or near your building, it makes sense to utilize it during your lunch break. Not only will you eliminate the need to exercise after work, and you’ll also give yourself a nice boost of energy to help get you through the often slower second half of the day. If you pack yourself a healthy lunch, you’ll benefit doubly by avoiding going out to eat for expensive, unhealthy meals.
Keep a Schedule
The best way to stay in shape is to keep organized and hold yourself responsible. You can make excuses about how busy you are, but you should always be able to find 30 minutes of your day in which you can work out. Whether you make it to a gym or workout from the comfort of your home, it isn’t that difficult to find the time. Usually, if someone says, “I’m too busy,” they are really just making an excuse for themselves.
